wahohoho-o.. little steiner girl...

For terms three and four of 2009 alexis attended our local Waldorf/Steiner nursery. Nursery is just like a kindy, but for 2.5-4 year olds, to distinguish itself from their kindergartens that are for 4-6 year olds.

Lexi was going just one morning a week until at the very end of the year she went two mornings per week, on her request.

Her nursery has a very natural, old fashioned sort of garden (unlike most modern kindies - no plastic in sight!), with a big sandpit, which has big rope swings over it-
big slices of tree trunk for clambering over, little rope swings, a bar to hang upside down from, little gardens that the kids help to tend, and a wooden dinghy!
and possibly the favourite thing was the massive patch of alpine strawberries, with the kids free to help themselves to the tiny, pale, but sweet wee strawberries!

at the end of the year the kids and parents all gathered for their advent spiral event...
(faces blurred for anonymity)
before being led into the specially decorated nursery-
the older children walk the spiral with a lit candle, but the nursery kids were deemed too little, despite having dipped their own beeswax candles previously (so hot wax = fine, lit candles = bad, ok?), but we still were treated to lots of advent songs, and a nativity story acted out with puppets by a team of five teachers on the little stage in the top right of the photo.

then the children were all presented with their artwork from the year, and a little plant, grown by their nursery teachers, to take home!
i think she has enjoyed it!
and in 2010 she'll be doing two mornings per week in one of the kindergartens, and is really, really looking forward to it!!

Another comparison...

Both of these were taken just before i took the tree down, on the 6th of jan.. just one year apart! Same tree, same spot, same baby!

Alexis, excuse the pun, thought it was like xmas when i took the barrier away & she could get at all the decorations.. even when i took the first photo she was reaching up to touch a little ornament that was hanging down by her hands!

I'm planning to get a photo of her with the tree every year on the 6th :-D

Only one day til big-girl-hood!

yikes... tomorrow is Alexis' first birthday! how scary! Our tiny little blob is becoming a young lady.. she's walking, talking (well trying to, she says "dad-dad" for dad, and "mum-mum" for food.. *sigh* i kid you not), has just learnt to point with her index finger rather than a whole fist, and is generally attempting to assert her authority whenever possible!

We had a belated xmas today, now that kadyn is down with us, which was really nice, the kids got lots of great stuff, including a wooden train track with a couple of bridges & a bunch of great Thomas trains! It has already been reconfigured several times, and some of us have been caught thinking "ooh if i just had another couple of curves, and maybe another switching point..." note the "i".. and alexis got some new books, which she adores! she tries to read them to us, and points out pictures.. kadyn got a huge friction-powered car transporter with 8 f-p sports cars on it! (sorry, i just have to quote the packaging- "Simulating the true styles and making carefully. Handsome Appearance. Vivid and great in style. To have both the quality of tenacity. To be highly praised and appreciable by consuming public." hee hee.. thesaurus anyone?) Plus alexis has already stolen kadyns new magnetic white board & magnetic letters, and has been having fun with her Hug-A-Planet..
Just before xmas we took the kids to Butterfly Creek.
Alexis got attacked by a butterfly.
She didn't notice..
